Every Wrexham Bean Co. bag features a unique print of a local Wrexham landmark to celebrate our city’s history and culture. For our Mount Elgon single-origin coffee, we chose to feature the incredible Wrexham and East Denbighshire War Memorial Hospital.
What is the Wrexham and East Denbighshire War Memorial Hospital?
The Wrexham and East Denbighshire War Memorial Hospital opened in 1926 as a tribute to those lost in the First World War, replacing the older infirmary on Regent Street. It was partly funded by local people and supported by a legacy from John Jones of the Island Green Brewery.
Over the decades, the hospital grew to include wards, a chapel, nurses’ residences, and a dental centre. It closed in 1986, with its services transferred to Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Since 1996, it has been repurposed as an educational building and is now part of Coleg Cambria’s Yale campus.
