Coffee was introduced to El Salvador in the mid-18th century, initially as a garden crop, but it wasn’t until the 1850s that it began to gain commercial importance. At the time, indigo dominated agriculture due to its ease of cultivation and profitability. Coffee’s rise to prominence began in 1856 with the export of just 695 bags, and the government soon started encouraging coffee farming.

The industry experienced exponential growth towards the end of the 19th century, as the development of synthetic indigo diminished the demand for natural dyes. Once one of the world’s largest producers of commercial coffee, El Salvador has since shifted its focus to quality over quantity. Today, 70% of its coffee is sold at a premium above commodity prices, reflecting its dedication to crafting exceptional speciality coffees.
